Urodynamics

Urodynamic testing is an in hospital, awake diagnostic procedure that provides valuable insights into the functioning of the urinary system. At Urogynaecology Specialists we routinely utilise this practice to enhance diagnostic accuracy, individualise care and improve treatment outcomes. The features of bladder function that are tested include the ability of the bladder to store urine (storage phase) and the ability of the bladder to empty urine completely (Voiding phase). Urodynamics tests can give significant amounts of information about individual aspects of bladder function including the strength and compliance of the bladder (detrusor Muscle), function of the urethral sphincter, Obstruction of the bladder outlet and the presence of detrusor overactivity. Urodynamic testing is usually accompanied by an outpatient cystoscopy which is performed following the urodynamic testing.

We perform all our Urodynamic assessments at Frances Perry House in Parkville. Frances Perry have a dedicated and highly experienced urodynamics service to support this sensitive but important diagnostic procedure. Patients can expect that the process will take approximately 2 hours. Your treating specialist will be present and is supervising your care. You will not be having any general anaesthetic on the day of this procedure, as such you don’t need to fast and you do not need someone to accompany you home.

Urodynamic testing is usually accompanied by an outpatient cystoscopy which is performed immediately following the urodynamic testing by your Urogynaecologist. Following your assessment, you can expect to meet for a consultation immediately afterwards with your treating Urogynaecologist. They will outline the findings with you and together you will make a plan for your ongoing management.

How to prepare for your assessment…

You will need to attend with a comfortably full bladder but you don’t need to be overly full such that you are in pain. You will need to undress from the waist down so it is preferable to wear separates rather than a dress or jumpsuit. We have private change area and you will be given a gown

You will have been given a bladder diary to complete - please bring this completed diary with you on the day.

Your admission time is 30 mins prior to your assessment time. Please arrive at your admission time so that the hospital staff can check you in and you can orientate yourself the space. You need to expect you will be with us for 2 hours.

If you are on oral medications for your bladder such as mirabegron, solifenicin or oxybutynin you may be asked to cease these for 5 days prior.

If you use a ring pessary for prolapse we prefer you to wear this on the day of your assessment.
